Web Slices give the user the ability to see what's new in a particular web service without having to go visit that page - it pushes a small piece of the page to the browser. It will show up in your favorites bar along with your other favorite bookmarks, and clicking on it brings up a small window with the item's picture, the current bid information and a refresh button. For example, if you want to follow an item on eBay, you can add that item as a Slice. Web Slices This feature lets a user "subscribe" to a particular piece of a web page. The open-source Firefox 3 browser arrived a few months ago, and it brought several crowd-pleasing innovations with it: a URL bar that lets you search your browsing history in plain language, a better add-on manager and beefed up protection against phishing and cross-site scripting attacks. Internet Explorer 8 arrives at a time when its main competitor, Firefox, is seeing a significant boost in its user base. Aside from the standard improvements to performance and base functionality one would expect from a new beta release, this version of IE8 - which is still a delicate youngster and not intended for the squeamish - also shows some nice enhancements built in especially to make life easier for the mainstream web surfer. IE8 Beta 2 is available now as a free download for Windows XP and Vista users. The browser, which has been in development for about a year, is the successor to IE7, the browser that's installed by default on any new Windows Vista or XP computer. Microsoft released the latest beta version of Internet Explorer 8 on Wednesday.
